Intro for the Total War Warhammer 3 Guide

Now just in case, you’re a complete beginner to this game I will explain the basic premise of the game. You pick a legendary lord from a faction and your job is to conquer until you have completed your victory conditions, or you decide to end the campaign.

Now the game combines two main gameplay elements which are a turn-based map and real-time battles. So, when your turn starts it starts on the turn-based map in which you can do multiple things such as moving your lords and heroes and attacking enemy settlements and lords during your turn.

You can also spend money to upgrade buildings and recruit soldiers. The actual battles though take place in real-time so when an enemy lord attacks you or you attack them you will then have the option to initiate a battle or retreat or siege if you are attacking a settlement.

Now when a battle is initiated both you and your opponent will have a deployment zone with your being marked in blue and theirs being marked in red. You can deploy your soldiers anywhere within the blue zone and your opponent can deploy anywhere within the red zone. You will see a white zone as well and that is where units with the vanguard deployment attribute can deploy (more about that later)

If you are defending, you will get to see how your opponent deploys before you start the battle. Once you have decided where you want to place your units you can click on start battle. The battle will then begin in real time with you versus the AI.

So, there is more to this game, but battling is a big part of this game and so that’s what you will be doing a lot. Now for most factions, there is only one resource that governs your army and that is income.

    Income and Growth

You need income to not only pay to recruit your units but also because they have an upkeep cost that you must pay each turn so as your income increases so will the amount and/or quality of units you can field.

Also, you are not able to recruit the most powerful units at the beginning of the game as for most factions the units you can recruit are based on the buildings you have in your settlements. So, for each faction, there will be buildings that allow you to recruit either a unit type or multiple unit types.

And as you level up a building you will get access to more powerful units. So, the other resource that affects the units you can recruit is growth. To level up buildings in Total War Warhammer 3 you first must level up the main settlement building and then you can level up the other buildings in settlements.

So, for example, to level up a recruitment building (a building that allows you to recruit units) to level 2 you must have leveled up your main settlement building to level 2, and the same with levels 3, 4, and 5.

Now it costs growth to level up a main settlement and growth accrues naturally at a certain amount but this amount it accrues can be increased or decreased by other in-game events, technologies, etc. many of which can be influenced by the player, some being influenced by random events.

Now four main ways of getting income in this game are:

    1. Defeating enemy lords and settlements
    2. Settlement building that generates income
    3. Trading with other factions
    4. Raiding in enemy provinces

The first is the most obvious in that when you defeat enemy lords and settlements you get a certain amount of loot based on the cost of the enemy force (not sure about the specifics of how this is calculated). The more powerful the enemy lord’s army was the more income you will get.

At the end of a battle with an enemy lord, you will also have the option to decide what to do with the prisoners if you won with one of the options being to ransom them for more money, one other option which increases your casualty replenishment and the other being to kill them for a leadership bonus.

When you successfully attack and defeat a settlement you also get a certain amount of money and then you get to decide what to do with the settlement which generally has three options which are to occupy the settlement, sack the settlement for another big boost of income but at the expense of weakening the city and raze it which gets you a bit of money(nowhere near as much as sacking) and destroys the settlement completely.

Next is building settlement buildings that generate income each turn. So when you have control of a settlement you have the option to build a certain number of buildings in that settlement and some of the buildings either generate income or create resources for trading or both. This is the main way you will be supporting your army’s upkeep.

The next method of getting income is trading which is accessed from the diplomacy menu. At the very start of the game, this is something you should check depending on which faction you are playing as it is a great supplemental to those coming from your income-producing buildings

The last is raiding which is when you set your army into a raid stance in enemy territory this will give you a bit of gold per turn depending on the income of the enemy territory but is generally used to make the enemy army come out and attack you.
